"for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body." - Ephesians 5:29-30

Ephesians 5:29-30
“for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body.” – Ephesians 5:29-30

There’s a universal phrase in our society that proves the first part of this verse to be true. The phrase is “always look out for number one.” This is a euphemism to say that we are always looking out for ourselves. By nature, we are selfish! Understanding that, Paul exhorts us here that in the same way we take care of ourselves, with rest, nourishment, care, and concern, we should have that same outlook with our brothers and sisters in Christ! Though written in the context of marriage, the application of this principle says that we are to love each other in the same way that Christ loves us as His church! How does Christ love the church? Well, He laid down His very life! As we imitate Christ, we are to die to our own wants, desires, and opinions in order that we might love, serve and honor one another.
