Discerning God’s Will
Acts 1:12-26 // January 25, 2026

“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.” Acts 1:12-14

How do I know God’s will for my life?

5 Ways to Discern God’s Will
1. Be Obedient to What He’s Already Said
“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.” Acts 1:12

“And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to waitActs 1:4a

“‘One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.’” Luke 16:10

God rarely reveals step ten when we haven’t been obedient to take step one.

2. Be Devoted to Prayer
“All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer…” Acts 1:14a

The purpose of prayer isn’t to get God to do our will; the purpose of prayer is to know God, so we can do His will.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Show me your ways, LORD; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:4–5 (NIV)

“As we spend devotional time in the Word and in prayer, God is pleased to commune with us and to reveal more of who He is, little by little.” Clyde Cranford

3. Be in Community
“All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said…” Acts 1:14–15

“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14

“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22

Our culture says, “It’s just me and Jesus.”
But the Bible says, “It’s Christ and His body.”

“‘Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.’” Acts 1:16

  • Peter knew the Word of God comes from God

  • Peter knew what the Word of God said

“To know that nothing happens in God’s world apart from God’s will may frighten the godless, but it stabilizes the saints.” J.I. Packer

4. Be Diligent With What You’ve Been Given
“‘So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.’ And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.” Acts 1:21–23

“The eleven apostles then did their homework on potential candidates and put forward only two who met these qualifications: Joseph and Matthias (v. 23). Likewise, in discerning God's will on specifics, we should be doing our homework, gathering information in order to narrow our options.” Tony Merida

5. Be confident in God's Sovereignty, Make a Decision, and Go With It
“And they prayed and said, ‘You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.’ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” Acts 1:24–26
