“Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the Lord would speak with Moses. When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent.Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.” – Exodus 33:9-11
What is a friend? A friend is someone who you can rely on, trust in, share and cry with. They know you and you know them. With a friend, you can speak openly about your ups and downs, honestly about your struggles, and freely about your convictions. A friend is someone you can call at 2:00am knowing they will answer the phone. Today, we read that the Lord spoke with Moses as a man speaks to a close friend. This implies a nearness of relationship. Therefore, despite how far you may feel from God, He desires a daily, intimate relationship with you. J. Oswald Sanders said, “Both Scripture and experience teach that it is we, not God, who determine the degree of intimacy with Him that we enjoy. We are at this moment, as close to God as we really choose to be.” He promises that if we draw to near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8).
