“By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him.” – 1 John 2:3-5
If you asked a young boy why he takes the trash out every evening after dinner, he would probably respond, “Because my dad told me to.” If asked why he listens to his dad he would probably reply, “Because he’s my dad.” The logic is obvious: a child listens to his parent without question (usually). This is a great indication of when a child belongs to a family: they listen and obey the voice of their parents. The same principle applies to us as believers. We are considered God’s children (1 John 3:1). We are part of His family. Here, John reminds us that one of the evidences of Christ in us is how we submit to God as our Father.
Do you submit to God as your father?
