“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3
The sobering reality of our lives here on earth is that we will all be forgotten soon enough. Sorry for the bad news, but think about it: do you know your great-grandmother’s name? How about your great-great-grandfather’s name? Chances are, you don’t. What this reveals to us is that most of us are two to three or, at best, four generations from being forgotten. Encouraging, right?!
As followers of Jesus, the value of the physical fruit of ” things” pales in comparison to the impact we can imagine of our eternal fruit. God tells Abram that ” all the families of the earth will be blessed” through him. That’s nothing short of a legacy but it’s not a legacy of wealth or possessions. All the families of earth were blessed by Abram because of his faith in the Lord! Because of his faith, the fruit of his life has impacted us today! In the same way, the fruit of our fellowship with God has a impact far greater than anything else we will leave behind. Three generations from now, people may not remember your name, but your spiritual life can certainly yield an impact that sets the course of your family forever.
What are you spending time on today that will be forgotten? How can you invest in eternity by the way you live today?
