“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” – Hebrews 12:11
“No pain, no gain” has been a common phrase in the fitness world for decades. While in recent years, health experts have reminded us that over applying this rule can be harmful; there is a kernel of truth in it. Left to our own devices, we tend to choose the path of least resistance. That’s why we need others (trainers, workout partners) to push us out of our comfort zone into new areas of growth. This is the same principle behind God’s discipline for us. As this passage reminds us, His discipline in our lives is often times unpleasant. However, the goal of bringing about fruit (godly character) in our lives is more than worth the pain of correction. God’s goal is not a cheap happiness but a comprehensive holiness.
