“Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” – Psalm 62:8
Trust. Who immediately comes to mind when you hear that word? Who do you trust with your belongings? Your darkest secrets? Your heart? Your entire life? Trust is not easily given because, at the root, it involves a surrender of control. That is frightening for just about everyone. Usually, in order to trust someone, you want to fully be able to pour your heart out to that person and trust that they won’t judge you, abandon you, ever do anything to bring harm to you, or betray you. Sadly, that does not always hold true between humans. Men and women fail us, not because they want to, but because of sin. There is only one Person who has displayed that He can fully be trusted. One Person we can run to and take cover because He gave up His entire life and died on the cross for you and me. That Person is Jesus. Trust is not something to understand; it is an expression of faith in the One you can fully rest in and trust. Jesus is our refuge, and He is trustworthy.
Schedule some time this week, about an hour, and sit down with an empty page in a journal or piece of paper and a pen and begin to pour your heart out. Don’t think about it; just write down whatever comes to mind and try to do that for 10-15 minutes straight. How did that feel pouring out your heart to the One you can trust and take refuge in?
