When God Speaks
Week 2: How Does God Speak?
How Does God Speak?
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” Hebrews 1:1-2
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)
“It is impossible to practice godliness without a constant, consistent and balanced intake of the Word of God in our lives.” Jerry Bridges
“When you read the Bible, you must think that here and now, God is speaking with me.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
What does this look like practically?
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26
Prayer is not a monologue. Prayer is a dialogue.
“We are usually surrounded by so much inner and outer noise that it is hard to truly hear our God when he is speaking to us.” Henri Nouwen
“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is!” Proverbs 15:22-23
“God has willed that we should seek and find his living Word in the mouths of human beings. Therefore, Christians need other Christians who speak God's word to them.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
A - Affirming: Does this word fulfill the criteria of 1 Corinthians 14, by being strengthening, encouraging, comforting, edifying, and upbuilding?
B - Biblical: Is this word consistent with the Scripture (not just a specific verse taken out of context)?
C - Christlike: Is this word consistent with the character, mission, and message of Jesus seen in the Scripture?
Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above1 proclaims his handiwork.”
