Life Marks 2025
Jan 26, 2025
2 Corinthians 8:1-5

As we wrap up our sermon series, Life Marks: Evidence of a Life With Jesus, Pastor Scott preaches from 2 Corinthians 8:1-5, and we learned about stewarding well what God has given us. Living a life of generosity where we respond to God’s grace by giving to fuel His mission is evidence that we are His children. Check out this sermon to learn more!

Life Marks: Evidence of a Life With Jesus
Week 4: A Life Marked by Generosity

“We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.” 2 Corinthians 8:1-5

A Jesus follower abides in Christ
A Jesus follower connects in community
A Jesus follower shares in the mission

Becoming the kind of people who abide in Christ, connect in community, and share in the mission will result in certain things that mark our lives.

Life Marks for 2025
1. Abiding Life Mark – Prayer
2. Connecting Life Mark – Love
3. Sharing Life Mark – Generosity

“The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1

Three Principles of Stewardship:
A. Everything I have belongs to Him
B. He’s entrusted some to me
C. What He’s entrusted to me I am to use for Him

“A lack of generosity refuses to acknowledge that your assets are not really yours, but God’s.” Tim Keller

“We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.” 2 Corinthians 8:1-2

Three Things We Learn from the Macedonian Churches:
1. Their Generosity Was a Response to God’s Grace

Two practical things this means for us:
A. Giving Is Worship

“Their giving was voluntary and spontaneous. It was of grace, not pressure. They gave because they had experienced the grace of God. Grace not only frees us from our sins, but it frees us from ourselves. The grace of God will open your heart and your hand.” Warren Wiersbe

B. The Attitude of My Heart in Giving Matters More Than the Amount I Give

“‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’” Matthew 6:21

2. Their Generosity Showed Their Trust in God

“For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord…” 2 Corinthians 8:3

“If you can find a gateway to giving that’s better than the tithe, wonderful.  But if not, why not start where God started His First Covenant people.” Randy Alcorn

3. Their Generosity Was Fueling God’s Mission

“…begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.” 2 Corinthians 8:4-5

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
