Life Marks: Evidence of a Life With Jesus
Week 3: A Life Marked by Love (The Way of Love)

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7

Becoming the kind of people who abide in Christ, connect in community, and share in the mission will result in certain things that mark our lives.

1. A New Commandment to Love

“Jesus answered, ‘The most important is, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’” Mark 12:29-31

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

“The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8

“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.’” Exodus 20:2

2. How Jesus Loves Us

Jesus Loves Us Initially

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins… We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:10, 19

Jesus Loves Us Sacrificially

“But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NASB)

Jesus Loves Us Unconditionally

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?... For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35a, 38-39

“Great relationships are not held together by feelings of love but rather a commitment to love.” Crawford Loritts

3. How We Love Each Other

We Love One Another Initially

“…this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” 1 John 3:11

We Love One Another Sacrificially

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

Practical Ways to Love One Another:
Investment of Time
Investment of Service
Investment of Talents and Abilities

We Love One Another Unconditionally

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends...” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
