Romans 12:1-2

Pastor Trenton Dorner preached from Romans 12:1-2 and we learned that if we are going to follow Jesus, we will be transformed by God into the likeness of His Son. In this sermon, we take a look at two facts about spiritual formation: (1) We cannot transform ourselves and (2) We can put ourselves in positions to be transformed. Formation: Discipleship According to Jesus
Week 3: Intentional Formation

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2

“And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

1. Follow Me – Be with Jesus
2. I will make you – Be transformed by Jesus
3. Fishers of Men – Become like Jesus

Three Enemies of your Spiritual Growth
1. The Devil
2. The Flesh
3. The World

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

Inevitable Formation Framework
1. Knowledge – What we believe
2. Relationships – Who we hang with
3. Habits – What we repeatedly do

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

"Sanctification is the process of becoming in practice what we are positionally in Christ." Jerry Bridges

1. We Cannot Transform Ourselves.
“but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” Romans 12:2

"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6

2. We Can Put Ourselves in Positions to Be Transformed.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION IS INTENTIONAL

Spiritual Reality Statement:
Jesus isn’t asking us to do more, he’s asking us to do differently what we already do.

Biblical Truth – What we believe

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” John 8:31-32

Gospel Community – Who we do life with
Spiritual Practices – What we repeatedly do

“A farmer is helpless to grow grain; all he can do is provide the right conditions for the growing of grain… This is the way it is with the Spiritual Disciplines—they are a means of God’s grace. The disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that He can transform us.” Richard Foster

Intentional Formation Framework
1. Biblical Truth
2. Gospel Community
3. Spiritual Practices

Biblical Truth + Gospel Community – Spiritual Practices = Hearer not a Doer

Biblical Truth + Spiritual Practices – Gospel Community = Self Righteousness

Spiritual Practices + Gospel Community – Biblical Truth = Heretic
