Formation: Discipleship According to Jesus
Week 4: Practicing the Slow-Motion Miracle

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17-18

What’s something I’m really good at?

“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son…” Romans 8:29a

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

Formation is Inevitable
1. KNOWLEDGE – What we believe
2. RELATIONSHIPS – Who we hang out with
3. HABITS – What we repeatedly do

Spiritual Formation is Intentional
1. Biblical Truth
2. Gospel Community
3. Spiritual Practices

Spiritual Formation is the process of becoming like Jesus through a partnership with the Spirit of God for the glory of God.

"If we do not make formation in Christ the priority, then we're going to keep on producing Christians that are indistinguishable in their character from many non-Christians." Dallas Willard

Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it’s getting

“People often complain that they are not who they should be, but they take no action to change.” Klyne Snodgrass

The ABC’s of Formation..
A - Always Remember Your Role

“‘I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.’” John 15:5

“We do not produce the fruit… It is the fruit of the Spirit within us; we simply bear it.” Clyde Cranford

The ABC’s of Formation..
A - Always Remember Your Role
B – Be like Jesus and do what He did

“And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” Matthew 4:19

  • “Follow Me” – Be with Jesus

  • “I will make you” – Be transformed by Jesus

  • “Fishers of Men” – Become like Jesus

“‘Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’” Matthew 11:28-30

Spiritual Practices for Abiding in Christ:
1. Reading God’s word

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

2. Prayer
3. Silence and solitude

“You don’t create intimacy; you make room for it.” Paul Miller

4. Sabbath
5. Fasting

A vine without a trellis will bear a fraction of the fruit because it is not supported correctly.

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
