Love Language: What God Says About Relationships
Week 3 – Love and Marriage: Part 1

“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

5 Disclaimers
1. This is PG-11 Sermon
2. Clarity is kindness
3. There is a Holy Spirit, and you are not Him
4. If you’re not married, don’t tune out
5. This is a conversation starter

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.” Proverbs 24:3

5 Wise Words about Marriage:
1. Marriage is God’s idea

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Genesis 2:18

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24

Marriage is a picture of the gospel

“This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” Ephesians 5:32

2. Marriage is a covenant, not a contract

Contract:
Conditional
Performance-based
Temporary

Covenant:
Unconditional
Relationship-based
Permanent

Covenantal love is a choice before it’s a feeling.
Covenantal love is faithful regardless of circumstances.

God’s Design for Marriage:
Marriage is a covenant relationship between one man and one woman for a lifetime

3. Marriage is not just about happiness, it’s about holiness

The world says, “Marriage is a temporary vehicle for my personal happiness.”

The Word of God says, “Marriage is a covenant promise for our mutual sanctification.”

There is a Holy Spirit, and you are not Him

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” Ephesians 5:22-23

Wives are to demonstrate Christlike submission by following their husband’s spiritual leadership.

What submission does NOT mean:
1. Submission does not mean “less than”
2. Submission does not mean obedience
3, Submission is not universal
4. Submission is not “no voice, no choice”

What does Christlike submission look like?
1. A woman of God respects her husband
2. A woman of God supports her husband’s leadership
3. A woman of God speaks life into her marriage

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25

Husbands demonstrate Christlike submission by lovingly dying to themselves to meet every need of their wife.

“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.” Psalm 128:3

What does Christlike love look like?
1. A man of God prioritizes his wife
2. A man of God walks in integrity and purity
3. A man of God leads with initiative

Husbands are the loving head of the family who lead with courage, integrity, and Christlike humility.

Wives are the lifesavers who follow their husband’s lead with respect, honor, and encouragement.

What if my spouse isn’t living out their God given responsibility?

“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.” 1 Peter 3:1-2
