In this message, Pastor Scott continues our Back to School series by teaching from the parable of the two foundations. In this passage, Jesus teaches that there are really only two options for what we build our lives on: one that is solid and unfailing and all others that are unstable and temporary.
Parable: A simple, fictional story used to teach a significant, spiritual lesson.
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:46-49
Lesson #2:
Everyone is building their life of something. When the storms of life come, the only secure and stable foundation is God’s word.
EVERYONE IS BUILDING THEIR LIFE ON SOMETHING
We all make life decisions based on how we see the world
You and I build our lives on what we value
IN THIS LIFE, STORMS WILL COME
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
THE ONLY SECURE AND STABLE FOUNDATION FOR MY LIFE IS GOD’S WORD
Back to Luke 6:
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.
“Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them” v. 47
“To build ‘on the rock’ means to obey what He says. To build ‘on the sand’ means to profess obedience but not practice it.” Warren Wiersbe
Submission to Jesus Christ is a non-negotiable part of salvation.
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 (NLT)
