The King Has Come And Is Coming Again!

Why should I re-orient my life around the second coming of Christ?

The way we respond to the second coming of Christ determines the rest of our days in this life and the life to come.

Groom = Jesus Christ

Matthew 24:36

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,a]">[a] but the Father only.

Christ will return later than expected, sooner than expected and at an unexpected time.

Matthew 25:1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lampsa]">[a] and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’  But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.  Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Be Expectant!

Matthew 25:1

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lampsa]"> and went to meet the bridegroom.

10 virgins = bridesmaids, who represent the expectant community of God

Luke 12:36-37

and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servantsa]">[a] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.

Matthew 24:42-44

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

“Consider what this might say about our heart and what this might mean about where our priorities and passions lie”. - David Platt

Matthew 25:2-4

Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

Be Prepared!

Wise = prudent, having future wisdom

Foolish = flippant, unwise, imprudent

Matthew 25:5-7

As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.

Matthew 25:8-9

And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’

oil = being prepared, prudent

Luke 12:35

 “To engage in all the practices that will help us draw near to Jesus, not merely to know about him but to know him.” - Scott Saul

Matthew 25:10

And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.

Matthew 25:2

Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

Matthew 13:5-6

 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.

Matthew 13:20-21

As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.

Will you be found walking in obedience to him when he returns, or will you be found wandering in disobedience?

BE Alert!

Matthew 25:11

Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’

Matthew 25:12

But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

 “they do not have enough time at this point because earlier they had to much time - Scholars David, and Allison

Little preparation and too much presumption will result in final rejection.

Matthew 25:13

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Matthew 24:42

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

Matthew 24:44

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Have your Christian life in order that when you are surprised, by his return, you will be ready.

How can we be ready? By placing our faith in Christ Jesus and by persevering in our faith until the end.
