Matthew 1:18-25

In this sermon, Pastor Scott preached from Matthew 1:18-25 and we took a look at the story of Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph. One of the things we were challenged with was to ask ourselves that when it came to our circumstances we’re in, are we trying to have control over it or are we taking the time to see what God is doing in it. Week 2: The Righteousness of Joseph

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.” Matthew 1:18-25

“Joy to the world the Lord is come. Let earth receive her king. Let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing.”

We tend to remove the humanity from our heroes and the messiness in the message of God’s word.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way…” Matthew 1:18a

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4

“Do you want to heat God speak? Read your Bible. Do you want to hear Him speak audibly? Read your Bible out loud.”

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:18

“And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.” Matthew 1:19

Expresses the inward predisposition from which active volition proceeds.

Information is good to know. Intention is how you grow.

“Although God will grant Christlikeness to us when Jesus returns, until then He intends for us to grow toward it. We aren’t merely to wait for holiness; we’re to pursue it.” Donald Whitney

“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream…” Matthew 1:20a

We want to control our circumstances rather than consider what God may be doing through our circumstances.

“‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).” Matthew 1:20b-23

“The book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David…” Matthew 1:1

“‘She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’” Matthew 1:21

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

“‘To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’” Acts 10:43
