Formation: Discipleship According to Jesus
Week 1: Spiritual Formation
“While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Matthew 4:18-20
What is the vision for your life?
“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son…” Romans 8:29a
“And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” Matthew 4:19
1. The Invitation: Being With Jesus
“And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him…” Mark 3:14a
“The first and chief need of our Christian life is fellowship with God.” Andrew Murray
2. The Transformation: Being Changed by Jesus
The invitation to follow Jesus comes with the expectation of transformation
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Do you realize that it is only in the gospel of Jesus Christ that you get the verdict before the performance?” Tim Keller
As a follower of Jesus, there is nothing you can do to make God love your more or less.
The salvation of a soul is the miracle of a moment. The growth of a saint is the work of a lifetime.
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…” 2 Peter 3:18a
“But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Isaiah 64:8
“…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12b-13
“Grace is opposed to earning. It is not opposed to effort! Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action.” Dallas Willard
3. The Intention: Become Like Jesus
“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son…” Romans 8:29a
Spiritual Formation is the process of becoming like Jesus through a partnership with the Spirit of God for the glory of God.
“Genuine sanctification is a thing that can be seen.” J.C. Ryle
“Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Matthew 4:20
