In this message, Pastor Scott finishes up our series “Who Is God” from the book of Exodus. When Moses heard God declare who He is, Moses had one response…worship! As we finish up this series, what should our response be to who God is? That’s what we explore in this message.
Week 8: “Our Response to Who God is”
“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” Exodus 34:6-8
“And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.” Exodus 34:8
Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped Exodus 34:8 (NIV)
“Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped.” Exodus 34:8 (NLT)
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” Colossians 1:15-17
Moses didn’t bow and worship because he was so holy but because he was human.
“He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.” Matthew 17:5-6
“And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.” Exodus 34:8
“Quickly” – Moses responded with urgency
Question to evaluate:
”Am I quick to respond to who God is?”
Your emotions shouldn’t drive your worship, your worship should drive your emotions
“Bowed” – Moses responded with humility
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God for the living God…” Psalm 42:1-2a
Question to evaluate:
”Because of who God is, do I live a life of humility?”
Humility is a right view of God that leads to a right view of self.
“Nothing sets a person so much out of the devil's reach as humility.” – Jonathan Edwards
“Worshiped” – Moses responded with surrender
Question to evaluate:
”Have I fully surrendered everything in my life to God?”
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SURRENDER:
We RECOGNIZE God’s power
We SUBMIT to God’s will
We REST in God’s character
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11
