Sermon Notes

The Greatest Love of All

I just want to go to Heaven and be in the physical presence of my Heavenly Father!

Weary

Wanting

“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” – C.S. Lewis

“I have the desire to leave [this world] and be with Christ, for that is far, far better.” – Philippians 1:23b (AMP)

“The desire to break camp here and be with Christ is powerful. Some days I can think of nothing better.” – Philippians 1:23b (MSG)

“Yet to remain in my body is more necessary and essential for your sake. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith” – Philippians 1:24-25 (AMP)

There is more of God that God wants us to see so we can more fully help others see more of God!

EXODUS 34:6-7

“The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, ’The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.’” – Exodus 34:6-7

TENSION QUESTION: How much does God actually love us?

BURDEN: Our love for God and others lacks depth because our understanding of God’s love for us is too shallow.

Abounding. Keeping. Thousands.

“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.” – Genesis 7:11-12

“And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.” – Joshua 11:4

QUANTITY OF GOD’S LOVE

Immeasurable and Inexhaustible

QUALITY OF GOD’S LOVE

Hesed.

“In the Old Testament, hesed is a central theological term. Yet because there is no exact English equivalent, it has proved hard for Bible translators to render it accurately. In various versions, it appears as ‘kindness’, ‘faithfulness’, ‘mercy’, ‘goodness’, ‘loyalty’, and ‘steadfast love’.” – Iain Duguid

PSALM 136

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever; the sun to rule over the day, for his steadfast love endures forever; the moon and stars to rule over the night, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, for his steadfast love endures forever; and brought Israel out from among them, for his steadfast love endures forever; with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who divided the Red Sea in two, for his steadfast love endures forever; and made Israel pass through the midst of it, for his steadfast love endures forever; but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who led his people through the wilderness, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who struck down great kings, for his steadfast love endures forever; and killed mighty kings, for his steadfast love endures forever; Sihon, king of the Amorites, for his steadfast love endures forever; and Og, king of Bashan, for his steadfast love endures forever; and gave their land as a heritage, for his steadfast love endures forever; a heritage to Israel his servant, for his steadfast love endures forever. It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever; and rescued us from our foes, for his steadfast love endures forever; he who gives food to all flesh, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.” – Psalm 136

THE “HESED” OF GOD

Powerful. Creative. Redemptive. Miraculous. Victorious. Generous. Thoughtful. Providing. FOREVER!

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.’” – Jeremiah 9:23-24

QUALITY OF GOD’S LOVE

Enduring for us.

Enjoyable to God.
