Acts 2:1-13

This passage is about the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples, empowering them to boldly proclaim the gospel and marking the birth of the Church, and we dive deep into the significance of Pentecost and what our response should be to it.

The Coming of the Spirit
Acts 2:1-13// February 1, 2026

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4

The Old Testament Promised the Spirit:

“I will put My Spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36)

“I will write My law on their hearts” (Jeremiah 31)

“I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh” (Joel 2)

Jesus Promised the Spirit:

“The Father will give you another Helper” (John 14:16)

“Wait for the promise of the Father” (Acts 1:5)

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” (Acts 1:8)

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.” Acts 2:1

1. What is the Significance of Pentecost?

Jewish Feasts in the Story of Redemption:
1. “Passover”

“‘…Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.’” John 1:29

2. “Feast of Firstfruits”

“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” 1 Corinthians 15:20

3. “Feast of Weeks” (Pentecost)

You shall count fifty days… then present a new offering to the Lord. Leviticus 23:16

Passover → the Lamb is sacrificed
Firstfruits → the first One rises
Pentecost → the harvest begins!

2. What Were the Signs at Pentecost?

“And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:2-4

There was a mighty sound (rushing wind)

There was a marvelous sight(fire rested on them)

There was miraculous speech (other languages)

“Then he said to me, ‘Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, “Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”” Ezekiel 37:4-6 NLT

“‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:7b-8

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” 1 Corinthians 6:19a

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4

“And they were amazed and astonished, saying, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?’” Acts 2:7-8

“‘…we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.’” Acts 2:11b

3. What is Our Response to Pentecost?

“And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others mocking said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’” Acts 2:12-13

God comes where He’s wanted.
