When the Gospel Meets Resistance

Acts
Apr 26, 2026
Acts 4:1-12

In this sermon, Pastor Jordan preached from Acts 4:1–12, where Peter and John faced opposition for preaching the gospel.

As Jesus followers, we will face pressure and opposition as we share our faith, and while people will reject the gospel, the good news is that the gospel cannot be stopped. The gospel is still being shared today, God is still making Himself known, and He is still saving people, so we are not to shrink back but depend on the Lord as we continue sharing our faith.

When the Gospel Meets Resistance
Acts 4:1-12

“And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.” Acts 4:1-4

What actually happens when the gospel meets resistance?

“And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. Acts 4:1-3

The gospel cannot be stopped.

“On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, ‘By what power or by what name did you do this?’” Acts 4:5-7

Three Hard Realities
The gospel will be resisted.
You will be pressured.

“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well.’” Acts 4:8-10

“When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20

Three Unshakeable Truths
The gospel cannot be stopped.
The spirit cannot be silenced.
