In this message Pastor Trenton Dorner teaches from Mark 8:31-33. God’s plan is not disappointing, our desires are just distorted. That is what we explore in this sermon.
THE GOSPEL OF MARK
MARK 8:31-33 //Setting Your Mind on Things of God
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:15
“You are the Christ.” – Mark 8:29
"And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” – Mark 8:31-33

2. PETER’S PROBLEM
JESUS PLANNED TO DIE. V. 31 “And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again."
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” – John 10:18
JESUS’ PLAN IS A NECESSITY
“And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again." -Mark 8:31
1. Jesus had to die in order to fulfill the Scriptures.
"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities." – Isaiah 53:3-5
2. Jesus had to die in order to grant us life in the Kingdom of God.
“Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.” – Hebrews 9:22
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
PETER’S PROBLEM
“And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” – Mark 8:32-33
SPIRITUAL REALITY: God’s plan is not disappointing, our desires are just distorted.
“Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God but on the things of man.”
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” – Colossians 3:1-2
