Mark 3:7-12

In this message Pastor Ricky teaches from Mark 3:7-12. Up to this point in our study through the Gospel of Mark, many people have been around Jesus, but will they finally see him for who he is? That is what we explore in this sermon.

The Son of God

The Crowd, Jesus’ Healing and Jesus’ Authority

Mark 3:7-12

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him.  And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

Crowds, Crowds, Crowds

V7-8

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him.

Mark 1:38-39

And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem (Jewish Territories)

Idumea, and beyond the Jordan (Jew & Gentile Territories)

Tyre and Sidon (Gentile Territories)

Opportunity (Gospel message and experience healing).

Obstacle (desiring Jesus only for physical help but not spiritual healing).

You might be a part of the crowd if…

- You request more from Jesus than worship HIM.

- When prayers go unanswered your pursuit of Jesus decreases.

- Very rarely are you just satisfied with Jesus.

“Why are we following Jesus?”

Pastor Scott Worthington “Our desire is not to entertain people for there is no song or dance or act we could perform to convince you to love Jesus more. Our desire is to help you grow in your walk with the Lord and share in his mission.”

“Are we a part of the crowd?”

V10

“for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him.”

John 2:23-25

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

- No modern medicine.

- Cursed by God.

- No access to the synagogue.

Mark 5:27-29

She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

“Are we desperate for the Lord?”

Authority, Authority, Authority

V11

And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

“Demons refer to the forces of evil in the world as well as the devil himself.”

“Digression on Demons”

- Demons are divisive (Luke 11:14-23

- Demons are deceitful (John 8:44)

- Demons desire dominion (Mark 5:1-13).

- 16 references of someone being possessed by a demon

- 13 references of someone being demonized

- 2 references to someone having an unclean spirit

Mark 1:24

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

Mark 3:11

And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

Mark 5:7

And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”

“Fell down” Greek = means an inferior prostrating or bowing in homage to a superior).

James 2:19

You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

V12

And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

“He Strictly Ordered, expressing strong disapproval, used of how God’s word prevails over both natural and demonic forces, a sovereign command to subdue evil).
