Jesus Sends The Twelve

The Gospel of Mark
Apr 30, 2023
Mark 6:7-13

In this message Pastor Trenton teaches from Mark 6:7-13. Disciples of Jesus can press on in the mission of God because they have everything they need in the person of God. That is what we explore in this sermon.

Jesus Sends The Twelve

Mark 6:7-13

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20

WHY IS PARTICIPATING IN THE MISSION OF GOD DAILY SO DIFFICULT?

FEAR

Fear of being incapable

Fear of being uncomfortable

Fear of being rejected

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. - Mark 6:7-13

  1. HE CALLED THEM TO GO OUT IN HIS AUTHORITY AND WITH HIS PEOPLE.

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. V.7

“If I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.” - Luke 11:20

  1. HE CALLED THEM TO PACK LIGHT AND BE REASONABLE.

He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. V. 9-10

“If I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.” - Luke 11:20

“It was as if He was saying: “You’re going to have to depend on my Father at every point of this mission. You are not to take anything with you, not even the slightest bit of change in your purse.” He wanted them to leave everything burdensome behind and rely totally on divine providence.” - R.C. Sproul

  1. HE CALLED THEM TO BE PREPARED FOR REJECTION.

11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” V.11

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” - John 15:18

“The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” - John 6:30-31

  1. We have been sent out by God.

  1. We can trust the provision of God.

“my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:19

  1. We don’t have to be God

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at something that doesn’t really matter.” - D.L Moody
