The Gospel of Mark

A Moment on the Mountain Top // Mark 9:2-13

“And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.” -Mark 9:2-4





Metamorphosis = radical change





The transfiguration does not signify a change in Jesus’ nature but rather an outward visible transformation of Jesus’ appearance to accord with his nature.

“And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.” -Mark 9:5-13

“See I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.” -Malachi 4:5

“Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.” -Matthew 17:12

“Because he poured out his soul to death and numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many and makes intercession for the transgressors.” -Isaiah 53:12

The Moment of Revelation and Worship!



“And his face shone like the sun.” ­-Matthew 17:2

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.” -Hebrews 1:3

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” -John 1:14

The Moment of Misunderstanding

The Moment of Affirmation

“…This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” -Matthew 17:5

“…This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” -Luke 9:35

“…This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” -Mark 9:7

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” -Hebrew 1:1-2

The Moment of the Cross

If suffering is involved in Messiahship, then suffering is also involved in discipleship.

Seeing Jesus in His fullness, our only response is Worship, Hope and Transformation, for He is God!
