A Widow’s Generosity
The Gospel of Mark // Mark 12:41-44

“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’” Mark 12:41-44

“On the topic of money, two truths are certain: the Bible has a lot to say about it, and most people don’t like to hear what the Bible says about it.” Danny Akin

“‘…where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’” Matthew 6:21

1. Jesus Sees What People Give

“‘…devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.’” Mark 12:40

“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums.” Mark 12:41

“‘From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.’” Luke 12:48b (NIV)

“And a pour widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.” Mark 12:42

“For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. ‘If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.’” Psalm 50:10-12

Three Guiding Principles of Stewardship:
1. Everything I have belongs to Him
2. He’s entrusted some to me
3. What He’s entrusted to me I am to use for Him

2. Jesus Knows Why People Give

“And he called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’” Mark 12:43-44

Sacrificial giving honors God even if the amount is small.

The attitude of my heart in giving matters more than the amount I give.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

“God doesn’t need our money. What He desires is our hearts, and what we do with our money reflects where our hearts truly are.” R.C. Sproul

“So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.” Acts 11:29

“Every New Testament example of giving goes far beyond the tithe. However, none falls short of it.” Randy Alcorn

The attitude of my heart in giving matters more than the amount I give.

“If you can find a gateway to giving that’s better than the tithe (10%), wonderful. But if not, why not start where God started His First Covenant people?” Randy Alcorn
