The Gospel of Mark
See You In Galilee // Mark 14:26-31

“And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, ‘You will all fall away, for it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.’ Peter said to him, ‘Even though they all fall away, I will not.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ But he said emphatically, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And they all said the same.” Mark 14:26-31

“For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Romans 7:15-19

Spiritual Reality #1: Humans and Our Capacity to Sin

“And Jesus said to them, ‘You will fall away, for it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’” Mark 14:27

“The sin that necessitates the sending of God's Son is not someone else's sin – the sin of Caligula or Nero or the legion of tyrants ever since – but the sin of the tenants of his own vineyard, of his own disciples — of Peter and James, of you and me.” James Edwards

TAKEAWAY: Until Jesus returns to gather His children, in our flesh, we will struggle with sin.

Spiritual Reality #2: Jesus and His Inexhaustible Grace

“But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” Mark 14:28

“Now after the Sabbath, … Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it… the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen… go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him. See, I have told you.’ So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.’” Matthew 28:1-10

TAKEAWAY: Sin committed after salvation does not negate our relationship with God.

Spiritual Reality #3: Peter and His Capacity for Pride

“Peter said to him, ‘Even though they all fall away, I will not’… But he said emphatically, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And they all said the same.” Mark 14:29, 31

TAKEAWAY: Pride is confidence in self that ultimately leads to inconsistency, frustration, disappointment, and failure.

Spiritual Reality #4: Jesus and His Deity

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’” Mark 14:30

TAKEAWAY: Jesus knows everything about us and even when we aren’t faithful to Him, He remains faithful to us.

Sermon in a Sentence: Jesus’ grace, mercy, and forgiveness is greater than the sum of all our prideful sin.
