This weekend, we were honored to welcome back Pastor Jeff Phillips, our Congregation Pastor of Hope Church Henderson. He preached from Mark 15:33-41, the death of Jesus.
We reflected on what the death of Jesus reveals and the gifts His sacrifice gives us. Jesus died to pay the penalty of our sin so that we wouldn’t have to. He was forsaken so that we could be forgiven, punished so that we could be pardoned—and He took our righteousness and gave us His righteousness. Oh what a Savior!

The Gospel of Mark The Gift of Jesus’ Death // Mark 15:33-41
“And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ And some of the bystanders hearing it said, ‘Behold, he is calling Elijah.’ And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God!’ There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 1. The Death of Jesus Reveals the Judgment of God
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” Romans 3:23

2. The Death of Jesus Reveals the Forgiveness of God

3. The Death of Jesus Gives Us Assurance
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” John 5:39-40

4. The Death of Jesus Gives Us Access
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him.
