The Sadducees Ask Jesus About the Resurrection

The Gospel of Mark
Aug 4, 2024
Mark 12:18-27

In this message, Pastor Tom teaches from Mark 12:18-27. From this passage, we took a look at the Sadducees’ question to Jesus about the resurrection and how Jesus answered it. Jesus said the Sadducees didn’t know or understand God’s word or God’s power. Some of us as Jesus followers are wanting God’s power in our lives but we care less about His word, and some of us love learning God’s word but we care less about His power. We need them both! We will never know God’s power without knowing His word, but knowing His word doesn’t mean we’ll have His power. Let’s seek Jesus individually and together as a church!

The Gospel of Mark
The Sadducees Ask Jesus About the Resurrection // Mark 12:18-27

“And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying,‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.’” Mark 12:18-27

The most obvious example of passive-aggressive behavior can be experienced when someone is gaslighting you and being emotionally manipulative.

“And they were seeking to arrest Him, but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So, they left him and went away.” Mark 12:12

“…they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians to trap Him in His talk.” Mark 12:13

1. Who Are the Sadducees and What Was Their Question?

The Apparent Question:
Whose wife will this woman be in the resurrection?

The Actual Question:
Jesus, aren’t you in fact a heretic?

2. What Was the Reason for the Sadducees’ Question?

3. How Did Jesus Answer the Question?

  • There is an after-life.

  • Resurrection is real.

  • Angels are also real.

  • Knowing what the Scripture says does not mean a person knows what the Scripture means.

  • There is no marriage in heaven.

“Jesus said to them, ‘Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?’” Mark 12:24

“There is an overall goal and a daily goal for the life of a Christian. As the daily goal accomplished, in time the life goal will be accomplished. What are the goals? Life Goal – Know God. Daily – Spend time with God.” Clyde Crandford
